First turn the acceptance requirements into a checklist
Acceptance requirements should be clarified before commissioning, including applicable specifications, objectives, sampling locations, tool methods and responsible persons. Visual cleanliness cannot replace roughness, and qualified roughness does not mean that dust or salts meet the requirements. Which items are suitable depends on the product and coating system.
The workpiece drawing number, material, batch and direction should be retained with the inspection record. For long beams and complex attachments, the location should be marked on the drawing to ensure that the shot blasting and painting crews are discussing the same surface, to avoid leaving only a close-up photo that cannot be located.
Different indicators adopt corresponding checking methods
| project | Check content | Recording requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Visual cleanliness | Check for rust, scale and visible residues against selected criteria | Original condition of workpiece, inspection location and agreed grade |
| Surface profile | Measure the profile matching the coating requirements according to the agreed method | Methods, apparatus or comparison samples, locations and results |
| Dust | Check residual dust according to project requirements | Adoption method, location and basis for determination |
| Pollution such as soluble salts | Carry out corresponding inspections when specified in the project | Sampling range, test results and limits |
| Welds and edges | Confirm spatter, glitch, occlusion and protection zone handling | Abnormal parts and supplementary processing results |
Sampling inspection locations cover difficult-to-process areas
The inspection should include both sides of the web, the inside and outside of the flange, the weld root, the end plate and the vicinity of the attachments, and cover the head, middle, tail and other positions as agreed. You cannot just check the large surface where the result is most likely to be achieved and then assume that the entire piece is qualified.
Record the reason and scope when the surface is unqualified, and make it clear whether it is pretreatment of incoming materials, insufficient coverage, abrasive state or transportation contamination. After rework, re-inspect relevant items as required; passing a certain visual inspection does not mean that other inspections affected by the rework can be skipped.
Storage and transportation after release still belongs to surface quality control
Cleaned workpieces should be protected from re-contamination caused by oil, moisture, dust and inappropriate contact surfaces. Supports, spreaders and storage locations should be consistent with the project schedule, and protection methods should avoid leaving contaminants on the surface to be painted. Workpieces that have been inspected, to be inspected and for repair must remain identifiable and cannot be retrieved based on appearance alone after being mixed.
The allowable intervals, environment and steel temperature conditions for coating shall be implemented in accordance with the coating technical documents and project requirements. When rust returns, condensation, contamination, or the agreed interval is exceeded, the designated personnel shall review and handle the problem. Spraying cannot be carried out just because the shot blasting station has been released earlier.
Handover records should be brief but traceable
| field | Record content | The receiving party determines accordingly |
|---|---|---|
| Workpiece identity | Drawing number, serial number, batch and quantity | Is it consistent with the workpiece to be painted? |
| Process status | shot blasting date, representative working conditions and supplementary processing | Whether changes requiring review have occurred |
| Check results | Project, location, result, exception and retest | Whether the conditions for entering the next process are met |
| Release status | Releasers, pending items, and quarantine flags | Which workpieces can be used |
| Storage, transportation and reception | Storage, handover time, receipt review and protection | Whether the surface is still valid after transfer |
Manufacturing, shot blasting and painting complete the closed loop
- Agree on the checklist, methods, positions and responsibilities before production, and use the same standards for commissioning.
- Record the scope of unqualified parts and isolate them, and clarify the repair and re-inspection.
- There is a one-to-one correspondence between the release record and the workpiece identification.
- Protection is performed during handling and waiting, and the recipient completes the agreed review.
- When coating problems occur, trace the incoming materials, process, inspection and storage and transportation records to avoid guessing the cause based on photos.
